Since 2020, firearm injuries have been the leading cause of death among children and teenagers in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are steps we can take to reduce the risks our children encounter. This includes safely storing any firearms we have, monitoring the environments our children visit, and preventing exposure to weapons in the home and community.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Store firearms safely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a firearm:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always store the firearm unloaded, with the ammunition stored in a secure, separate location.<\/li>\n<li>Lock firearms in a secure location that is only known and accessible to the owner\/adult(s) in the household.<\/li>\n<li>Store the key or combination to the lock in a separate location that a child can&#8217;t access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Talk to your child about firearm safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gun safety is a difficult topic to broach with anyone, especially children. But it\u2019s important to have an age-appropriate, open, and honest conversation with your child. Start the conversation early by telling them that if they see a gun, they should not touch it and immediately tell an adult. Revisit the topic whenever your child is going to be spending time in a new or unfamiliar environment, such as going to a friend&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ask about weapons before your child visits another home<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before a child visits a new friend or family member&#8217;s home, I advise parents to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Questions-to-Ask-Before-a-Playdate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ask the adults of that household if their home has any weapons<\/a>, and if so, are those weapons locked and stored in a safe place. An example of how to ask this is, \u201c\u2018My kid is pretty curious, and our doctor recommended that I ask \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradyunited.org\/programs\/end-family-fire\/ask-to-end-family-fire\">is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?<\/a>\u2019\u201d\u00a0 If a gun owner does not know how to safely lock and\/or store their firearm, refer them to the resources below.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Keep your kids safer from gun violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s also helpful to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid toys that are weapon-based or weapon-adjacent.<\/li>\n<li>Restrict <a href=\"https:\/\/kpthrivingfamilies.org\/pediatricsblog\/online-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access to violent video games, media, and television<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your kids regularly about household and community safety.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage your child to speak up about <a href=\"https:\/\/kpthrivingfamilies.org\/pediatricsblog\/is-my-child-being-bullied\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bullying they experience or witness<\/a> to you, a teacher, or another adult.<\/li>\n<li>Teach your child how to call 911 in an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Teach your kids <a href=\"https:\/\/kpthrivingfamilies.org\/pediatricsblog\/teach-your-kids-how-to-stay-safe-around-strangers-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to stay safe around strangers<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Resources for Parents<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>American Academy of Pediatrics<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/Pages\/Handguns-in-the-Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guns in the Home: How to Keep Kids Safe<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/news\/Pages\/firearms-violence-prevention-demands-a-public-safety-approach-like-regulation-of-motor-vehicles.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gun Violence Prevention Recommendations<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A gun in a home with a curious child is a dangerous, and possibly lethal, combination.
