They watch videos, scroll through social media, study, play, and connect with family and friends. Digital platforms provide us so many positive opportunities \u2013 but they can have a darker side. We need to talk with our kids about online safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">How do we protect our kids from the dangers of time spent online?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tips about online child abuse sent to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missingkids.org\/content\/ncmec\/en\/blog\/2021\/online-enticement-reports-skyrocket-in-2020.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> have increased over 90% since before the COVID-19 pandemic. To understand the risk, and to get ideas about how we can protect our children, I reached out to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/providers\/triciatayama\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Tricia Tayama<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> M.D.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a Kaiser Permanente pediatrician and child abuse specialist.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She agrees kids are spending much more time online \u2013 and digital platforms can be used for both positive and negative purposes. She explained, \u201cWe can\u2019t simply block one app and assume we\u2019ve reduced the risk.\u201d Instead, \u201cOur children need to be knowledgeable about how to recognize risks online and empowered to speak up.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Protecting our kids starts with education. We need to <a href=\"https:\/\/kpthrivingfamilies.org\/pediatricsblog\/love-is-respect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">educate even young children about healthy boundaries<\/a> in virtual and in-person relationships, because bullying and abuse can start at very young ages.\u202fFor example, when teaching children about what body parts are private, parents should say that no one should take or send pictures of those parts. Similarly, let kids know that it\u2019s not ok for grown-ups to have \u201csecrets\u201d with children, whether in-person or online.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Tayama offered these 6 tips to create a safer digital experience for your family:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">1. Talk early and often with children about the risks of online activity. <\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Children need to be able to recognize risks online and feel empowered to speak up about them.\u202fBe upfront about what they should look out for, so kids can recognize any red flags before they turn into a bigger problem.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">2. Log on regularly with your kids to get a first-hand view of their online world. This gives you opportunities to see what brings them joy, where they need more education or safeguards, and how to integrate personal values into their online lives. Ask to learn and play video games with them. I\u2019ve done this with my teens. I\u2019m terrible \u2013 but they enjoy my genuine interest and the comic relief!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">5. Avoid judgement of your child.<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Online predators gain power when kids are afraid to tell their parents what\u2019s happening and keep their activities secret. Encourage your kids to talk with you about everything they\u2019re doing online \u2013 including and especially if anything they see or experience makes them uncomfortable. Let kids know you won\u2019t be angry or blame them for what they show you.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">6. Make sure your kids see you taking digital breaks.
