The answer depends on the child\u2019s age and the amount of juice, and can be summed up with an unenthusiastic \u201cmaybe.\u201d The American Academy of Pediatrics recently came out with recommendations for juice intake in infants, kids, and teens. Here are the highlights:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>No juice for babies under 1 year old.<\/strong> There are no health benefits to giving a baby juice \u2013 and several risks. Skip the juice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whole fruits are a better choice.<\/strong> They have fiber and take longer to consume.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juice can cause diarrhea.<\/strong> We even call this \u201ctoddler\u2019s diarrhea.\u201d If your child has diarrhea, one of the first steps to helping them is to cut out juice in their diet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Too much juice can cause malnutrition in kids.<\/strong> It can fill them up and leave them too full to eat foods with other important nutrients.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drinking juice may cause a child to be overweight.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sugar in juice is linked to tooth decay.<\/strong> If you serve your young child juice, only give it in a cup at a meal \u2013 not a bottle or sippy cup to carry around.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unpasteurized juice is risky.<\/strong> It may contain pathogens that can cause serious illnesses and should be given to children cautiously, if at all.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderation wins! <\/strong>One hundred percent fresh or reconstituted fruit juice (not fruit \u201cdrinks\u201d or \u201ccocktails\u201d) can be part of a well-balanced diet for children older than 1 year when consumed within these suggested limits:\n<ul>\n<li>None under 1 year<\/li>\n<li>1 to 3 years \u2013 no more than 4 ounces a day<\/li>\n<li>4 to 6 years \u2013 no more than 4 to 6 ounces a day<\/li>\n<li>7 to 18 years \u2013 limit juice to 8 ounces a day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What should they drink? <\/strong>Water and some low-fat milk is all they need.
