Yup. That\u2019s right \u2013 your blogging pediatrician.<br \/>\nI was irrationally scared of getting the vaccine because I was pregnant. Then, when I got influenza \u2013 with a fever of 104 degrees, a cough that shook the house, and an inability to stand because I fainted when I did \u2013 I was scared that I would lose my baby. I was terrified that my poor choice would cost her life.<\/p>\n<p>The next time, I got exposed to H1N1 at work, back when it was called the swine flu and we had no vaccine for it. My son was exposed at school, so we spent a week lying in my big bed, incapable of doing anything to help ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Because of these experiences, I find it hard to speak calmly about the flu vaccine. So, I asked several of my colleagues for one bit of information that they really wished every parent understood about fighting influenza. Here\u2019s what they said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting vaccinated isn\u2019t just for you \u2013 it protects those around you!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe flu shot protects not only your child but also people around your child, like their elderly relative, best friend who has asthma, classmate\u2019s baby sibling, or healthy teacher who would rather be in the classroom than home sick for a week.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/sarahbrowne\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Sarah Browne<\/a>, KP San Mateo<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI want my kids to enjoy their grandparents for many years to come.\u00a0Getting kids vaccinated for the flu is the least I can do to help ensure that happens for them and for other families too.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/kenhempstead\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ken Hempstead<\/a>, KP Roseville<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s not every day that you can do something to protect a baby or a senior citizen from a potentially devastating disease. Each year previously healthy children die from influenza and its complications. As doctors, we see that and want parents to understand how scary influenza can be.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/benjamindeters\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Dr. Ben Deters<\/a>, KP Napa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pediatricians get flu shots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI get the flu shot every year.\u00a0 It protects me from getting the full-blown illness with its high fever, muscle aches, terrible cough, and misery at night.\u00a0I recommend it to all the kids and families that I take care of because it&#8217;s safe to give and actually works!\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/deweywoo\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Dewey Woo<\/a>, KP San Francisco<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI believe in the flu shot.\u00a0I get one myself and my wife and kids get one.\u00a0We are always the first to get our flu shots.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/ludovicoredula\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ludovico Redula, Jr<\/a>., KP Modesto<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Influenza is not just a cold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s far more serious.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/firassalim\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Dr. Firas Salim<\/a>, from KP Vacaville, teaches his patients that the common cold is different from real influenza. With colds, you get congestion, cough, and mild fever for a few days. With influenza, your child will have a high fever and can be in bed for a longer time.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/harryduh\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Dr. Harry Duh<\/a>, from KP Hayward, says \u201cIn fact, the flu may potentially cause more than 50,000 deaths per year in the United States alone. Getting the flu vaccine may prevent two-thirds of flu-related deaths in children.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Your child will still get colds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Despite getting the flu vaccine, your family will still get colds. KP San Mateo\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/sarahnanni\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Dr. Sarah Nanni<\/a> told me that many parents say, &#8220;I gave them the flu shot last year, and they still got sick.&#8221; Dr. Nanni then explains, \u201cYour child may get multiple colds per year. The shot won\u2019t prevent colds. The flu vaccine prevents a serious, life-threatening illness caused by the influenza virus.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Everyone over 6 months old needs a vaccination.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kids need 2 shots in their first year: \u201cFirst dose primes, second dose protects,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/provider\/angelazarate\/about\/professional?professional=aboutme.xml&amp;ctab=About%20Me&amp;cstab=Professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr.\u00a0Angela Zarate<\/a>, from KP Santa Rosa.
